LASER CUT DRESS
YEAR
2019
LOCATION
SINGAPORE
MATERIAL
FAUX LEATHER

This laser-cut dress explores humanity’s complex relationship with the natural world, translating environmental fragility into sculptural form. The piece confronts the devastating effects of human impact on coral reefs, using the delicate geometry of coral as both inspiration and metaphor. Its monochromatic palette evokes the stark reality of coral bleaching and ocean acidification, a visual reminder of beauty lost through imbalance and neglect.
Constructed from rigid yet flexible materials, the dress maintains an organic silhouette that mirrors coral’s structural resilience while allowing fluid, wave-like movement reminiscent of the ocean’s rhythm. An addition of coloured light displays an act of revival, symbolically restoring the vibrancy of a once-living reef. Through this synthesis of material, movement, and illumination, the piece embodies both the vulnerability and endurance of life beneath the sea.
